Ford Explorer Slipping In First Gear
Q. Hello, I own a 1999 Ford Explorer 4x4 with 95,000 miles, automatic transmission, 4WD, 4.0 liter fuel injected SOHC V-6. My question concerns an apparent problem with the transmission. When shifting out of first, the transmission will hesitate and the engine rpm will go up 800-1000 more than normal before shifting into second. It shifts normally into third, fourth, and overdrive.
Also, I have noticed that, randomly, the "overdrive off" light will turn on, the switch will not operate, and the only way to get the light to turn off is to turn off the car. I have performed all normal maintenance on the car at the normal intervals. Any insight into this problem is greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
JohnA. There are a two adjustments that can be made, one for the first gear band and one for the intermediate band. I would suggest letting your Ford Dealer make the adjustments. Hopefully that's all it will need.
There was a problem with the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) solenoid attaching bracket breaking. This would cause transmission line pressure to drop and cause a slip.
Check the PCM for codes. If you have DTCs P0732, P0733 or P1762, there may be a problem with the Transmission Main Control Assembly causing low transmission line pressure as well.
Ford can check for both of these conditions.
