Pathfinder Stuck In 4WD?

Q. Hello Vince, I have a 1998 Nissan Pathfinder and I wanted to ask you a (hopefully) simple question:

As you probably know, the New York metro area was blanketed by 6-8 inches of snow this morning. I started to goto work at 6 AM when most streets had not been cleared of snow. So, I put the drive-selector to '4H' position to engage the 4 wheel drive. A green light showed up on my dash. So far so good.

After I reached my office parking lot, I put the drive-selector back on it's normal position at '2H'. However, I noticed that the green light on my dash will not go away. I tried moving the selector back & forth, but the light will NOT GO AWAY!!

I am wondering if this is a simple problem with the light OR am I permanently driving on 4WD??

Any suggestions??

Thanks in advance,
Manjula

A. Shifting from 4H to 2H will not shut off the light. If you drive a short distance, it will come out of four wheel drive and the light will turn off. Now if the light doesn't go off, either it is stuck in four wheel or the switch is stuck. To determine which it is make a hard turn on dry pavement. If the wheels jump and skip, you are in four wheel. If it turns nice and smooth, it is not in four wheel and the switch is just stuck. If you are stuck in four wheel, it's possible you have a bad 4WD solenoid. Best thing to do, since you are still in warranty, is to take it to a Nissan dealer and let them check it out and repair it.
