Volvo 240 Windshield Washers
Q. Hello, I have a Volvo 240 station wagon with a four speed automatic transmission. I have two questions: First, the wiper fluid will not spray onto windshield. On occasion, it will spray a very tiny amount from the right but not from the left. It does not appear to be clogged (I checked all three lines under the hood) and their is plenty of fluid in the receptacle.
The rear wiper will spray that's why I'm assuming its not clogged.
Second, when it's gets below 30°, my car drags when you try and start it. The battery is brand new, but has done this ever since I purchased it ,which was last year.
Many thanks for all of your help.
CarmenA. The lines themselves don't usually clog unless the fluid inside freezes. The point were they clog is the small opening in the nozzle itself. This happens a lot when cars are waxed and the wax gets into the opening and hardens.
The best way to clear them is to blow compressed air back through the nozzle. If it is really bad, I use a thin piece of stainless steel wire to poke the holes and push the clog out. Now I'm assuming that the washer fluid is not frozen.
As for the dragging when you start the engine on cold mornings, it may be that you need to switch to a lighter, winter grade motor oil. It could also be a weak battery. You can have the battery tested and if it checks out okay, try changing the oil and use a 5W30 weight oil.
