Honda Goes Wacky

Q. If you can give me a lead on what the problem could be with my car I will be (nearly) eternally grateful! I have a 1996 Honda Civic EX, 48,000 miles, manual shift, fuel injected with ABS.

The battery apparently died last week and was replaced. Fine. But since the exchange the controls for my air conditioning are wacky. The buttons no longer match up with the icons on the buttons as set at the factory. The center vents blow only when the defrost button is depressed. Otherwise the upper and lower blowers are crossed as well but it does blow and cool.

The mechanic checked out the car and the fuses, etc. are fine. He said the system is electronic and not vacuum so the problem must be in the electrical. He thinks the system stopped in a weird position but can't figure out how to reset 'it' so it functions normally. Ever heard of this happening? My dealer is clueless as well. Can you help me??? Any ideas????

Thanks!

A. I'm afraid I have never run across this problem or even heard about it. About the only thing I can suggest is to disconnect the negative battery cable and reconnect it after about five minutes and see if that reboots the system.

If it doesn't, you can post this question in my forum. There is a Honda tech who helps me there and he should be able to help you out.
