Tempo Not Charging

Q. Hi, my name is Armando. I bought a 1984 Ford Tempo GL, I think is a 140 hp, with cruise control. I just put a new alternator and the external regulator, and still not charging. Also the fan is not working either. My situations is not really good to send the car to the mechanic I will try to be patience to try to fix my car. The alternators was checked and the fan motor too and are good.

Thank for you suggestions,
Armando

A. Okay, the first thing to do is to check all the fuses and fusible links and make absouletly certain they are good. I highly suspect the 18 gauge brown fusible link is bad since it powers both the engine cooling fan and voltage regulator. Also make sure the battery is good. Most auto parts stores will test the whole charging system you for free.

Then check to see if you have power at the F terminal of the voltage regulator (orange/blue wire) and make sure you have battery voltage there with the key ON. If you do, check the F terminal of the alternator (orange/blue wire) and make sure you have battery voltage there with the key ON as well. If not, this wire is open and will keep the alternator from charging.
