Shuddering Caravan Revisited

Q. Hi Vince, I had written to you a few weeks ago about a shuddering problem I had in my 1992 Dodge Conversion van. If you recall, I had a shuddering between about 45 and 60 mph. You suggested that I may have had the wrong fluid in the transmission. I had it changed and the problem was immediately resolved.

It's been a few weeks and several hundred miles later but I think the problem is returning. It is not as pronounced as before, I only notice it about 60 or so mph and it is not nearly as severe but was wondering if you had any other ideas or suggestions.

Thanks,
Jim

A. I'm glad I was able to help get your problem fixed Jim.

If you just had the fluid drained and replaced, you will get some recurrence of the problem because more than half the fluid in a transmission will not drain out. When you put the new fluid in, it was okay until it started mixing with the old fluid and brought the problem back to a lesser degree.

To get all the old fluid out, you would need to get a transmission flush. That would be my next recommendation. Of do it the old way three or four more times until problem disappears completley.
