Nissan Pathfinder Valve Lifter Noise

Q. Mr. Ciulla, Can you give a leg up on valve lash adjustment on my 1991 Nissan Pathfinder? I am hearing some lifter noise and experiencing a little missing, in my poor high miles engine, I was wanting to see if some adjustment can remove any of my problem. A bit of knowledge we be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,

A. The VG30E engine has hydraulic valve lifters so there is no adjustment possible. You can try replacing the oil and filter, substituting one quart of ATF for one quart of oil. Let it go for 3,000 miles and do it again if necessary. If after the third time the tapping is still there, you will need to replace the hydraulic lifters.
