Bucking Honda Prelude

Q. I have a 1988 Honda Prelude:

  • 2.0 si with dual overhead cam
  • Fuel injection
  • Manual transmission
  • 4 wheel steering

The check engine light comes on after driving any variety of time usually not to far. Then I lose power can't go over 50 mph, then starts to buck. I can shut the car off and start it right away the light is off for awhile then I go through the same process.

I have checked all the grounds, replaced the fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, plugs, timing belt. Someone said; how about the distributor, EGR valve, maybe a faulty computer how can check that? Getting frustrated and broke!!!! Hope you can help

Thanks in advance,
Mike

A. When the Check Engine light comes on, the computer has detected a fault in the system.

What you need to do is pull the codes from the computer and see what they are. That will give you a good place to start looking for the problem.

Bucking is usually an ignition problem. Most likely a bad Crank Angle Sensor (CAS). Although I wouldn't rule out a bad Main Relay. Usually when that relay goes bad, it won't start at all.
