Mazda 626 LX Dash Lights
Q. Vince, I recently bought a used 1996 Mazda 626 LX, 88,000 miles, automatic, cruise control. It runs great the only problem is that some dashboard lights come on and I don't have a car manual.
When I am driving at around 60+ mph for 20 minutes or more the O/D off light blinks on and off. I am guessing that is for overdrive, but it doesn't seem to matter if I hit the overdrive button or not, the light keeps blinking. I have never had overdrive before so I may be using it incorrectly.
The other light that is bothering me is an orange light located underneath the speedometer. It is not labeled. It stays on constantly. This may not be a problem but since I don't have a manual I don't know what it means.
Again, my car is driving great. But since this is my first big purchase I am nervous about something going wrong.
Thanks for your help,
AlysonA. The O/D OFF indicator light will flash if a malfunction exists in any of the Electronically Controlled Automatic Transmission (EC-AT) system components. So it is alerting you to the fact that a fault does exist. Since it happens at highway speeds, I would guess it's probably the OD solenoid or a control unit.
I don't have a picture of the instrument cluster so I can't be sure to which light you are referring to. It may be the Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) on in conjunction with the fault in the EC-AT system. The best thing to do is go to a Mazda Dealer and you can order an Owners Manual from them.
