Jeep Door Locks

Q. I've just bought 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee (6 cylinder, 4.0 liter.) Before I bought it I noticed the driver's side automatic lock would lock all 4 doors but would not unlock them (it would only unlock the driver's side door). I told them I would not purchase the Jeep with this problem and the dealer repaired the problem by replacing "the switch."

Over the first few days of driving it I noticed that the driver's side door would automatically lock as I was driving (unfortunately I did not notice this before I purchased it.) According to the manual all doors are to lock after starting first the engine then accelerating past 15 mph. This is a programmable feature according to the manual and when I called the dealer they advised that it's probably been programmed to lock only the driver's door and they advised bring it in and they'll re-program it.

The manual doesn't mention that you can program this feature in varying ways, and it doesn't make sense to me that it would or could be programmed to lock only one door. I'm worried that these may be symptoms of an electrical problem. What do you think??

A. I'm sorry to say I have no experience with this system. Something like this I send back to the dealer because they are better able to handle this type of problem.

Offhand, I would say if they can reprogram it to do what you want it to, let them. If it is an electrical problem, they can repair it under the factory warranty. Either way you can't lose. So let them take care of it for you.
