Toyota Celica All-Trac-Turbo

Q. I have a 1988 Toyota Celica All-Trac-Turbo that has been sitting for seven years. I have put in a new battery and I have had the starter checked and it is getting fire. When I ground starter to battery it seems there is a loose connection. It will turn the engine over slightly then it looses the fire. Can you tell me how to ground it so that it will start.

Can you tell me what the problem is? Why it will not start?

A. Just by bolting the starter to the engine you have grounded the starter. If the starter is cutting out, you may have a bad starter relay, located inside the left kick panel, or the wiring is loose or corroded. What you will need to do is make sure the battery connections and the battery cable on the starter is clean and tight.

To eliminate everything else as a possibility, run a jumper wire from the + battery terminal to the small starter terminal. If the starter turns good and strong, the problem is in the ignition switch, starter relay or wiring. If it doesn't. then you have a bad starter or cable connection.
