Sentra Idles High

Q. I would like to fix my 1988 Nissan Sentra four cylinder automatic that has a throttle body carb. The problem is that the cold running idle adjustment works when it's cold. It keeps the high idle then comes down to regular slow idle and then the problem comes on again to high idle after the motor is warmed up.

A. There are a lot of inputs controlling the idle speed, but I think the one most likely causing the problem is the coolant temperature sensor. You can try replacing it or have it tested to make sure the temperature signal matches the ambient temperature. If it is off by more than three or four degrees, it needs to be replaced.
