Mercury Sable Headlight Bulb Upgrade
Q. I read your article on the Mercury Tracer Light Bulbs and I have a 1995 Mercury Sable. The diagram of the light stuff Headlight Bulb Setup looks the same as the one in my owner's manual. I tried replacing the bulb with some brighter lights because the current lights are way too dim.
After disconnecting the connector, I try to rotate the retainer clockwise but the furthest it would go is about 1cm. I've also tried rotating it counter-clockwise and the same problem occurs. It's the same with both lights. I've also tried pushing on the things coming off the retainer with a key to try to get it to move further but without success.
Is it supposed to be like this? Do you have any suggestions on how to remove this retainer?
Thanks,
CamoA. Your vehicle uses a 9007 halogen bulb. If you are trying to install a bulb which is a replacement for a ie: a 9004 bulb that would explain your problem since the plastic tabs which align with the retainer are different. You will have to research and purchase a brighter replacement for the 9007 in order to successfully retrofit your car.
Remove the headlamps bulb retainer by rotating counterclockwise (when viewed from rear) about one-eighth turn and sliding the headlamps bulb retainer off headlamps bulb. Keep the headlamps bulb retainer as it will be used again to retain the new headlamps bulb. There is a detent that will require a little more force to overcome to fully rotate the retainer.
Warning: The replaceable halogen headlamps bulb contains gas under pressure. The halogen headlamps bulb may shatter if the glass envelope is scratched or the halogen headlamps bulb is dropped. Handle halogen headlamps bulb carefully. Grasp halogen headlamps bulb only by its plastic base. Avoid touching glass envelope. Keep halogen headlamps bulb out of reach of children.
