Toyota Camry Power Steering Rack Seal
Q. Hey Vince. I've got an 1986 Toyota Camry that's leaking power steering fluid on the passenger side of the rack and pinion. Is this seal replaceable? if so, can it been done with the rack in place? I don't want to speed too much money on this car. It runs okay but burns some oil. Will using synthetic engine oils help much with the oil burning situation?
A. No, the Power Steering Gear Assembly has to come out to replace the seal. And I have found it is better to replace the Power Steering Gear with a remanufactured unit since the seal will probably still leak after it is replaced.
A new Power Steering Gear Assembly from Toyota is $570.13. An aftermarket Power Steering Gear Assembly will be much less.
Synthetic oil will not help the oil burning. In fact it could make it worse. Maybe it's time to start looking for a new ride?
