Stop Lamp Problem

Q. Hi: My name is Phil from Columbus, Ohio. I have a problem: Our 1995 Chevy Lumina 4 door 3.1 liter has an electrical problem. The stop lamps do not function all the time. The upper light functions perfectly always.

I notice that when I activate the turn signals (either one) the stop lamps start functioning okay but will soon become erratic again. Both bulbs were replaced recently due to being burned out. I am trying to find a common point for the two rear stop lamps and the turn signals - perhaps the flasher.

Thoughts?
Phil

A. My bet is the turn signal switch itself. Here is a tip that MAY save you some money. Try pushing the hazard flasher switch in and out as many times as you can. There may be a build up of grease on the contacts and moving the switch will spread it out somewhat and possibly fix for good. The brake lights circuit goes through the turn signal switch. Third light has it's own circuit.
