Mazda Smells Of Gas

Q. Hi Vince, I own a Mazda 626 August 1990 model. It has A/C, P/S, Cruise Control 2.2 liter fuel injected 12 Valve engine. My problem is that when I have been driving it and I park it in the garage I can smell a petrol fume smell near the fuel cap and a hissing sound can be heard from the cap.

The fumes seem to be leaking from the fuel cap. I went to get a new fuel cap as I thought it might have a bad seal but the guy behind the counter looked at it and checked for cracks in the seal and there was none. He seems to think the problem isn't the fuel cap. What could the problem be and how can it be fixed?

Thanks in advance for your help,
Julie

A. There is a Two Way Check Valve that controls the pressure in the fuel tank. This valve is probably bad and is allowing too much pressure to build up in the tank and it's being forced past the gas cap gasket.

The valve is located under the car, near the gas tank. It is directional so when it's replaced you need to note the direction of the old one.
