Chevy EL Camino Cruise Control

Q. Hello Vincent, I found your site on Yahoo and thought maybe you could help me. The problem I am having is with my cruise control for my 1982 Chevy EL Camino. Let me just give you a brief history of the car. I purchased it in 1993 and over the years I have done much work replacing and upgrading most everything bumper to bumper.

Chevy EL Camino Cruise Control

It originally came with a computerized 305 cid engine but have since replaced it with a remanufactured 350 cid 4-bolt and yanked the computer. About four years ago I was having a problem with my cruise control so I yanked it and put in on a shelf thinking that one day I would try to find out what is wrong with it.

Well that day came three days ago so I completely disassembled the transducer, cleaned and inspected everything, checked all vacuum lines and the servo.

After reinstalling the unit and taking it for a spin I remembered why I took it out in the first place. When I set the cruise the accelerator goes all the way to the floor. It DOES disengage correctly either by tapping the brake or manually on the wiper lever.

Everything is hooked up the way it was taken apart except for one thing. On the transducer itself there is a type of switch that I am unable to find out what it is or how to hook it back up. It is screwed directly to the transducer, has two electrical wires, one being a beige color and a black one for the ground. It is a small round cylinder that also has a vacuum tee on the opposite side of where the electrical wires go in. There is also a small filter where the wires plug into.

Is this an essential part to the cruise, or is it just a convenient location that Chevy found to put a switch that operates something else entirely? And why is it flooring itself when I activate the cruise? I can find only limited information about this unit on the net so any help that you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Vincent,
El Camino Mike

A. To make things simple, I would either go to an old Chevy dealer that has been in business for a long time and see if they have a service manual for this year so you can read up on operation of the servo.
