Couple Of Probe Problems

Q. I have two problems on my 1993 Ford Probe. Here are the car's specs:

  1. 1993 Ford Probe GT
  2. 2.5 Liter, V6
  3. Manual transmission
  4. 134,000 Miles
  5. Fuel Injected
  6. no ABS brakes
  7. P/S - A/C - Cruise control
  8. Rack and pinion steering

The first problem is related to the blinkers on my 1993 Ford Probe GT. The interior dash flasher lights do not light up, nor does any of the front or rear exterior flashers on the car. I replaced the flasher box under the dash. Also I checked the flasher fuse in the fuse box mounted under the dash on the driver's side along with the relay under the hood of the car. I did find one burnt out bulb when checking the bulbs and replaced it. Despite my efforts, the problem continues.

Secondly, while I was working on the Probe's flashers, I noticed a small drip of antifreeze coming from the engine. A couple days later, I noticed the heater blowing cold air into the car when the car ran idle. At that time, the water temperature gauge showed the water was at a normal running temperature, not cold. However, when the car is being driven, the air warms up as if it nothing were wrong. It is only when the car runs idle, such as at a stop light, the air from the heater blows cold.

Thanks for your help,
Roy

A. It sounds to me like you have a bad 4-way flasher switch. You've just about eliminated everything else. If the turn signals work, you know the wiring is good. I think if you install a new switch, you'll fix your problem.

As for the heating problem, it's probably low coolant in the engine. The reserve tank may have coolant in it, but the external leak is not only allowing coolant to leak out, but air to come in defeating the reserve system. Repair the leak, top off the coolant in the radiator and reserve tank and I think you'll get more heat at any speed.
