Cherokee Slave Cylinder
Q. A friend of mine wants to buy a 1990 Jeep Cherokee from his landlord; the jeep was bought at auction. The landlord is willing to pay for the work to be done by me before the sale of Jeep. It won't hold clutch fluid, looks like the slave/throw out bearing assembly (fluid drips from bottom of bell housing); it's dry everywhere else.
I already told him to replace it is not easy, the drive shafts, transfer case/transmission and possibly exhaust need to be removed or moved to do the work. I've done major work on Jeep CJ's, Toyota Celica's & Supra's, Ford EXP's, Chevy Z-24's, Toyota Four runners, and a lot more. I'm willing to do the work, but as anybody knows time spent determines the cost for the repair.
The owner is willing to pay either way, but I'm a fair guy and just want to know flat rate time on this job to charge him fairly. I also told him that if it is the slave cylinder, the clutch and pressure plate should be done, since they are probably soaked and possibly damaged due to the leak, and the flywheel will have to be turned.
If you know any little tricks that may make the job easier than I suspect it will be (reminds me of a rear main seal job on a 1993 Explorer with a 5 speed, same amount of removal items), The Jeep has 150,000 miles on it.
I'm not ASE certified, but with all the work I've done since I was 17, and am now 31, I probably could get certification these days. The reason I haven't, is because I enjoy working on cars as a hobby, and fear if I did it for a living, I would never want or enjoy working on my toys again.

A. The standard time to replace the clutch assembly on that truck (assuming a 4.0 liter engine) is 5.6 hours. That includes: R&R transmission, replace throw-out bearing, pressure plate, disc fork and slave cylinder If necessary. Add .4 hours to R&R flywheel.
there's no special trick to it. It's just a lot of heavy work, what we call Bull Work. It is rated for a B mechanic which means he needs some past experience which you seem to have. I don't see any special problems with the job.
