Some Good Fuel Pump Advice

Q. Hi, just thought I would drop a note. I came across your site today and although I haven't read all of your advice, thought I would mention this. I had an 1986 fuel injected Chevy V-6 with electric fuel pump in tank. This thing drove me nuts for months. Someday's it would run fine others it wouldn't.

Changed a lot of things. Sometimes it wouldn't start. It would rough idle/high and low or just rough. Fuel pressure was good. It ended up being the darn fuel pump. It built pressure but wasn't maintaining it consistently? Electrical connections were all good. Should have done better testing I guess. This fix has worked for me a couple of times since on other Chevy's.

Thanks for another good web site on the web!
Tim

A. You learned something that just about every mechanic around has been bit by at least once. A fuel pressure test is good, but if the car is running normally, it won't show anything. Sometimes you have to drive around with it to see if the fuel pressure drops when the engine displays the symptoms. If it does, you nailed the pump. If not, you know to look somewhere else for the problem.

Another important test is a fuel volume test. A pump may put out the proper pressure but fail to put out the volume of fuel the engine needs to run.
