Knocking Eagle
Q. I have a 1992 Eagle Premier and it is a V-6 3.0 liter automatic transmission. I have had a lot of problems with it here recently. I recently had the oil changed and afterwards, say maybe 20 minutes later, we ran it about 8 miles up the road. I had to pull over due to it starting to make a knocking noise.
Two days later my friend went and brought it back to his house and the knocking is not like it was. Is it possible that there may be a valve that could be lose or does it sound like it may be further complications within the engine itself? Also we have no idea how to change the transmission filter in it.
It is the oddest car to work on. It has 101,488 miles on it and I don't think that the people who owned it before me ever changed the transmission fluid. Do you think that it would considerably help its overall shape that it is in if we went ahead and had it done, or should i just consider junking it out??
Please let me know before I have to wind up putting more money than its worth into it.
Thanks,
EricaA. It's very difficult for me to try and diagnose a noise in this venue Erica. If the knocking noise started after the oil change, the first thing I would do is check the oil and make sure they filled it. Also, if they put the drain plug back but forgot to tighten it, the plug could have fell out and all the oil drained out.
If this is the case, and at this point it would seem most likely to me, then the engine has probably suffered some major damage.
The best thing to do is to take it to a mechanic and let him listen to it. He'll be able to give you a more informed diagnosis than I can.
