Acura Cooling Fans

Q. Hello, problem: There are two fans. The one cooling the radiator is working. The one cooling the condenser is not running. I don't know what causes the problem. But when using A/C, the coolant gets hot (boiling). It comes out of the reserve tank. Then the temp gauge goes high. However, when not using the A/C, the problem doesn't seem to exist.

I need your help to determine what causes the problem. If a repair is necessary. What parts must be replaced first? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Best Regards,
Q. Pham

A. If one fan runs and the other doesn't, switch the relays. The relays are located on the inside fender well just behind the right headlight. If the problem changes with the relays, replace the defective one. If the problem remains unchanged, try running power directly to the fan motor to insure it works. if it doesn't run when jumped, you need a new motor.

If that checks out, you'll need to do some electrical troubleshooting. The system is a little complicated due to the fact that not only do the fans come on, the speed is variable depending on conditions. It's a two page procedure so the best thing to do is get a service manual and an ohmmeter and follow the diagnostic tree to locate the specific problem. There is a fan control unit and a fan timer unit located under the dash that may be bad. The only way to determine that is by doing a circuit test.
