Rumbling Trans Am

Q. Hi Vince, Our son has a 2000 Pontiac Trans Am 6 speed with about 20,000 miles. When the car is first started something rumbles like the exhaust system is loose or rubbing on something. The noise seems to be coming from the rear 1/3 of the vehicle. Once the car warms up after a minute or so the sound stops.

However, after stopping for gas and a short shutdown it starts again and then stops after it's warmed up again. The exhaust and tailpipe mounts have been checked and do not appear to be loose nor does anything appear to be rubbing. Someone suggested the noise is "normal" in this style vehicle OR the catalytic converter is going out. Any thoughts? Other than the noise the car runs great and sounds good once it's warmed up.

P.S. The noise was noticeable before but now seems to be louder after our son had a Flowmaster muffler and tail pipes installed. Thanks and also please advise if the problem is something that the vehicle warranty would cover.

Tim

A. The noise you heard before may or may not have been normal. But now that there is a FlowMaster exhaust system on it, it will be almost impossible to tell now. As for the vehicle warranty, that went out the window when he installed the exhaust.
