Stalling Corsica
Q. I have a 1992, Chevrolet Corsica, four cylinder, automatic transmission. It has 123,000 miles, ABS brakes, P/S. I have a problem with it stalling.
This problem rears its head when I am driving over 45 mph, usually on the freeway, and I come to a stop when exiting off. As it starts to slow down, it begins to shake a bit and you can tell it is going to stall out. When it comes to a complete stop, or a slow cruise-less than 5 mph, it stalls out. I have to shift into park and then start the car again.
Often, after starting the car, I try to put it back into drive and dies. This happens at least half a dozen times until I find the right combination of shifting it into gear and put enough gas where it comes to a shuddering start then drives just fine.
This problem does not happen all the time, however, once it does happen, it will continue to happen over and over again during the same driving session. And it only continues the problem once I get it over 40 mph or so. I hope you might be able to help.
I'm knew to this area and I'm a bit concerned about taking it to a mechanic I don't know.
Also, once I get home and stop the car for good, coolant starts to come out of the overflow tank cap. I have replaced the thermostat on the coolant system. I'm not sure if these are two separate problems or they are both connected somehow. After the car cools, I've filled the coolant to an acceptable level (in between Full Hot and Full Cold), ran the car in park to get it hot enough to turn on the radiator fan, just before the fan turns on, I've noticed a steam smoke coming from the radiator cap, then the fan turns on and the steamy smoke goes away.
The car cools down below the half mark and the fan turns off. I can then turn the car off and no leak from the overflow tank. However, if I fill it up to FULL COLD, this problem seems to come back - leaking out of the overflow tank cap.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated and I thank you in advance.
KevinA. The stalling problem is a bad transmission torque convertor clutch solenoid. It is staying locked on when hot. About a $225.00 dollar job. As for the coolant problem, it's not related. Make sure you put the thermostat in the right way. It could be the water pump is corroded on the inside. Possible bad head gasket also.
