Ford Escort Transmission Acting Up

Q. Hi There, I own a 1997 Ford Escort sedan that has a 2.0 litre engine, automatic transmission with overdrive, 103,000 kilometers (64,000 miles), fuel injected, no ABS, with power steering and A/C. No cruise control and rack and pinion steering (I think).

Problem: It seems as though the transmission gets stuck in overdrive; when this happens it will not shift down (only manually) and after coming to a complete stop it usually will still stay in overdrive when I start out again. Also, since the first time that this happened it occurs quite regularly (daily) and four of those times it would not start. I would stop at the store and when I came out it would not turn over; all of the electrical stuff is on but there is not even a peep when the engine is supposed to start.

Are there any hidden warranties on the transmission??? Any help that you may offer is greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Tim

A. I checked the TSBs and there is no mention of this type of problem. I suspect what is happening is either the valve body has some dirt or contamination causing the valves to stick, or the Torque Converter Control System has an electrical malfunction.

I wish I could be more specific for you.
