Jeep Cherokee 4WD Disc Brakes
Q. I do not know how to remove the calipers to replace the pads and have the rotor turned on a 1990 Jeep Cherokee 4WD, 6 cylinder 4 door.
Thanks in advance,
BennyA. That's not too difficult. Here's what you do:
Caliper Removal - Four Wheel Drive:
- Raise vehicle and remove front wheels.
- Remove caliper slide pins.
- Rotate caliper rearward by hand or with pry tool. Then rotate caliper and brakeshoes off mounting ledges.
- Remove caliper fitting bolt and disconnect front brakeline at caliper. Discard fitting bolt washers. They are not reusable and must be replaced.
- Remove pads from caliper.
- Remove caliper from vehicle.
Caliper Installation - Four Wheel Drive:
- Install brakeshoes in caliper.
- Connect brake hose fitting to caliper but do not tighten fitting bolt completely at this time. Be sure to use new washers on fitting bolt to avoid leaks.Install caliper. Position mounting notches at lower end of brakeshoes on bottom mounting ledge. Then rotate caliper over rotor and seat notches at upper end of shoes on mounting ledge.
- Coat caliper slide pins with GF 661 or Dow 111 silicone grease . Then install and tighten pins to 10-20 Nm (7-15 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Position front brake hose clear of all chassis components and tighten caliper fitting bolt to 31 Nm (23 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Install wheels. Tighten lug nuts to 102 Nm (75 ft. lbs.) torque.
- Bleed brake system.
