Pontiac Sunbird Clicking And Blinking

Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, I have a 1993 Pontiac Sunbird LE with a 3.1 liter V-6. I'm 17 am an "amateur" mechanic, but this problem has caught me by surprise. I notice that all the lights on my car, when turned on, seem to fluctuate constantly.

They don't turn off, but it's like they're always slightly blinking. Since it is ALL the lights that do this, it leads me to believe it can't be a fuse or something simple like that. Also, I listened to the engine a bit, and there's definitely a clicking sound in the engine that was not there before. I was wondering if you might, considering your vast automotive knowledge, have an idea of just what is wrong. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,
DM

A. If the noise is coming from a relay then I would have to determine which one it is and how it ties into the electrical system. Another possibility is that the voltage regulator inside the alternator is bad. This to me would seem to be the most likely cause. Easiest thing to do is try swapping out the alternator with one you know is good and see if that takes care of the problem. If the voltage regulator is bad, the clicking relay could be the effect and not the cause.
