Jeep Wrangler Transfer Case

Q. I have a 1989 Jeep Wrangler. The problem I have is that the front drive shaft is turning but the front axle will not engage. So far I have replaced the whole vacuum set up from the front axle to the transfer case with a factory replacement. I even replaced the vacuum plug on the top of the transfer case (model 207 on an automatic transmission with a 258 six).

Either it is the vacuum shift motor on the front axle or something else but wanted your opinion. The Jeep has a two inch body lift and it seems as if the four-wheel shifting lever is not engaging properly because of it. I am not sure if there is an aftermarket kit to adjust the shifter or is it in the linkage or maybe still just the shifter motor on the axle?

Thanks for any help,
Danny

A. Here is how you adjust the Range Rod.

  1. Remove transfer case shift lever boot, then position shift lever (1) in the four-low position.
  2. Position a 1/8 inch spacer between forward edge of shift lever and shift lever gate.
  3. Raise and support vehicle.
  4. Loosen lock bolt (2) on adjusting trunnion (3), then move range lever (5) fully rearward to the four-low position.
  5. Position linkage rod (4) so that it fits freely in range lever (5), then tighten adjusting trunnion bolt (2).
  6. Lower vehicle and remove spacer from shift lever.

If the front drive shaft is actually being driven and the that drive is not going to the wheels, you have either a bad differential or your locking hubs are not working.
