Buick Park Avenue Blower Resistor

Q. Hello, My A/C blower fan stopped suddenly, as if a fuse had blown. Fuse is good at left hand interior fuse block. Fan motor bearings had been noisy previously, so I replaced fan motor for good measure. Dealer indicates that the blower speed relay at the under-hood fuse block often goes bad, and if it is not the relay it is the resistor.

The dealer printed a page that looks very little like my car under the hood, showing a resistor floating in the air, but no location for that resistor. My problem is that I cannot find the resistor, or a good diagram that shows the resistor location. The diagram for the 1993 Buick High Speed Blower Relay from your site looks like my car's with the exception that the two blower relay slots are empty on my car.

The Haynes manual for 1985-1995 full size front-wheel drive goes into some detail about the right hand interior fuse block and relay center, and talks about A/C Select Relay and A/C Blower Motor Relay, but there is no mention of a resistor. It does not contain a good wiring diagram or explanation of the locations of A/C components otherwise.

My questions:

  1. Am I on the right track with this repair? Do you have suggestions about directions I should take in solving this problem?
  2. Where is the blower fan resistor on this car?
  3. Can you suggest a good source for a wiring diagram for this car?
  4. Although unafraid to use a voltmeter I have no idea how to test a relay, can you offer any suggestions for doing so?

Thanks for your time,
Clay

A. Sounds like you are on track. The resistor should be somewhere that the blower motor can blow air on it as it get's fairly hot, somewhere in the blower case.

A relay is a basic switch that is controlled by another source. Most electrical diagrams will show how this relay is wired. I would try another dealer for the correct model year service manual or even better, a book from one of their classrooms on electronic HVAC.
