Chrysler Lebaron VSS Location
Q. Hello, I've been having an intermittent problem with my 1993 Chrysler Lebaron convertible, US model, I'm from Canada, with the 3.0 liter V-6 Mitsubishi engine. The engine stalls on stops and slow downs when the temperature outside is hot, above 70°F and or humid but it does not give me a code. When the temperature is cool and or dry, the engine runs really smooth.
I've already changed the plugs, the distributar cap and rotor, the plug wires, the Idle air controler, the exhaust gas recirculation, the throttle position sensor, the oxygen sensor, and the fuel and air filters. I've also spent some time on cleaning the throttle body and have changed the intake air manifold gaskets as well as the head cover gaskets, there was some leaking.
Since all these modifications during the past two years, the car is better but still seems to look to stall on hot days and in traffic; and it finds it once in a while.
I believe all I have left are the speed and manifold air pressure sensors, amongst others I do not believe are implicated here, and or the head gaskets. Since I cannot change the head gaskets myself, I would like to change the Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) but I cannot find it.
People on the net have told me it is on the right drive axle where it joins the transmission and even the local dealership has shown me their technical diagrams BUT it is not there! There are no wires in that vicinity, nor anything attached to the "joint".
I'm therefore desperate to find someone who knows what I'm talking about and if possible, find some images to clarify the situation. Even Haynes does not have a proper image!!!
There are two non-identified sensors on the transmission housing from the front of the car, one under the transmission dip stick and the other above what I believe to be the neutral start switch and selector indicator, under the battery. Could one of these be the VSS? Do you have an image to show me what those are?
There's even one that said that the 1993 model does not have a VSS but rather an input and output sensor on the transmission housing. I'm getting all mixed up with this information and ideas. Comments? I hope it is not just a vacuum leak, how do you check for those? Any tricks?
In desperation,
AxematA. If your particular vehicle doesn't have a Distance Sensor, the Output Speed Sensor provides the PCM with the vehicle speed signal.
Distance Sensor mounted in passenger side transaxle output housingHowever, I do not believe the speed sensor is your problem. I would think it is much more likely to be either the Coolant Temperature Sensor (CTS) or the Intake Air Temperature (IAT) Sensor.
