Chevy Malibu Power Steering Pulley

Q. Hello Mr. Ciulla, I have a 1978 Chevrolet Malibu Classic that I have recently changed engines in. It came with the stock 305 engine and I replaced it with a 383 aftermarket engine. The problem I am having is the power steering pump does not seem to fit now. The pulley for the pump rubs against the harmonic balancer.

I have tried other replacements, I was told the 383 block is actually a 350 block with modifications done to it, and have not found the right fix for it. Either the replacement brackets don't line up or the pulleys don't line up. Any suggestions?

If I have to I will go to an aftermarket power steering pump but they are quite expensive, over $200.00, and would rather not have to do that. By the way I don't know if this makes a difference but it came stock with the 4 speed transmission but I replaced it with an automatic transmission. Everything worked fine until I changed motors.

Thank you for you time,
Larry

A. You need to look at both engines to see where the difference is. Is the new harmonic balancer bigger? Do both blocks have the same bolt holes in the same places? Sounds like you are going to have to get creative here and make up a bracket or two and get this thing running. Sounds like a nice piece!
