Hot Camaro?

Q. I have a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with 52,000 miles. It has the 5.7 liter V-8 with a manual 6 speed transmission. For the past 6 years it has consistently run at 190° according to the temperature gauge. A few days ago, the car started running at 235° (redline is at 245°).

The water pump and coolant was replaced 8 months ago when the pump gave out while I was driving. I have had no trouble since that time until just now. I brought it in to the dealer and they found "nothing wrong" with it. They checked the water pump, coolant level, pressure on the coolant cap, hoses, thermostat, engine trouble codes, electric fans, and the temperature gauge.

They claim that the car is operating within the correct range so not to worry. I don't understand how a car's normal operating temperature can change +40 degrees for no reason at all. Please advise.

Ron

A. The first thing I would do is check in front of the radiator for any debris that would keep air from flowing through the radiator. These are real low to the ground and it's very possible that you may have sucked up a plastic bag or leaves into the ductwork. If it's okay, I would replace the thermostat just in case. This is a fairly low cost item.
