Hop Up A F-150

Q. Dear Mr. Vincent Ciulla, I am looking forward to buying the 2001 Ford F-150 Harley-Davidson Edition (5.4 liter Triton V8), Automatic Transmission. The only problem is, it lacks speed. I was looking at the Ford Lightning but it doesn't provide adequate seating, so the question is; What can I modify on the engine to give it a little kick. Supercharger? New Cams? Nitrous? Any Ideas? Please provide any manufacturer that stocks these items. Thank you on behalf of all those you have helped.

Sincerely,
Kosta

A. If you go to the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) web site, you can locate manufacturers of high performance parts and kits. You can also obtain some catalogs from these companies as well.

There are many things you can do to increase the performance of your truck. As you mentioned, a supercharger, racing cams and a nitrous system would do it, as well as a performance chip for the PCM. You can also get a performance ignition system and intake kits that purport to adding up to 10 horsepower. Some modifications will not be street legal, such as a nitrous injection system. You can check with a local speed shop in your area as to what's legal and what's not.

You should also keep in mind that any modification you make to the engine will void the manufacturers new car warranty.
