GMC Sonoma Extended Crank

Q. After viewing your web site I can't really find the answer I am looking for. I have a question about a possible problem. I have a 1999 GMC Sonoma 4X4 and I have noticed that after the vehicle sits for a little bit or overnight and I try to start it, that I have to hold the key a few seconds until it starts. I usually hold the key for two to three seconds and then the vehicle starts.

When I turn the vehicle off after it starts then try to start it again, the vehicle starts right up just by turning the key and not holding it for any length of time. Is this some sort of fuel problem? If so where would I start to try and cure this so my vehicle starts right up every time?

Thanks for your help.

A. The first thing to do is check the fuel pressure. You are describing an extended crank. This is most likely a bad/leaking fuel pressure regulator valve. If it leaks, it drips inside the intake plenum and temporarily floods out the cylinders near it causing this symptom. After the ignition is turned off the fuel pressure should hold pressure, not drop off.
