Pontiac Grand Prix Speedometer

Q. Hi I have a Pontiac Grand Prix LE 3.1 liter engine. While driving down the highway, when I feel like I'm going 60 mph, the speedometer reads 90 mph and the cruise control stopped working. I noticed a little smoke on the steering column. If you know what might be the problem please let me know.
