Mercedes Benz C280 Transmission

Q. Hi I have the following vehicle but it does not idle properly. Every time I let it idle it tends to have a surge. Two guys gave me different theories to my problem. The one said my air flow meter is faulty, the other said it is my throttle. My other problem is that my car does not reverse like it should. These same guys told me it is the accelerator cable which I had fixed and still the same problem persist.

The other said it is my gearbox but I had it serviced now recently. Please can you help????

A. There are many things that can cause an unstable idle. Such as a bad Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Intake Air Temperature sensor, sticking EGR valve and quite a few others. The injection system on that car is extremely complicated and I really don't recommend a DIY to get into it. I used to say it takes ten minutes to fix a problem and three days to diagnose it.

I would start with a good throttle chamber cleaning. That will, most times, fix an unsteady idle condition.

Cleaning Throttle Bodies

If the transmission service didn't help, then the problem is inside the transmission. Most likely in the valve body. There were several modifications to the valve body to correct harsh shifting into reverse.
