5 Better Than 3?

Q. I've got an 1984 Isuzu Impulse with a 3 link suspension. In 1985 they introduced a 5 link suspension on the car. Now I don't know anything about suspensions really, but I'm curious about what a 3 link suspension is, and why the Isuzu engineers thought it necessary to introduce 2 additional links on them in 1985. Are 5 links better than 3? If so, why?

Please help me figure out the mystery of the links.

Thanks,
David

A. The 5 link suspension is usually associated with the rear suspension. It makes for a more stable ride and reduces total weight. As a side benefit since it is more compact, it makes more room in the trunk and passenger compartment on some vehicles.

In a 5-link layout, each suspension arm is located to take loads from one single direction, along the arm's axis, allowing the use of straighter, lighter arms. Two arms, one trailing the other leading are aligned into a Watt link. This allows the rear wheel to move at a rearward angle when viewed from the side. In a straight line, toe angle is reduced while a toe-in effect was added in cornering and braking situations to further increase stability.
