Ford Bronco Difficulty Filling Gas Tank
Q. My wife has a 1989 Ford Bronco II XLT 4WD, 5 speed manual transmission, 86,000 miles, 2.9 liter V-6, P/S, P/B and A/C. Several months ago the fuel pump died. We had it replaced. It smelled like gas so we took it back again and they took care of the small fuel leak at the sending unit. Since that time it is almost impossible to put gas in the tank.
19 out of 20 times it will spit back out of the filler no matter how slow you put it in, then that one time it will take fuel with no problem. We took it back to the original mechanic as well as another to check vent hoses etc but the problem still exists.
To make this even more mysterious, the filling station my wife goes to is full serve, the owner will try and put gas in her car, if it won't take it he has her drive around the pump island to the other side where most times it will then take gas. Can you shed any light on this??
Thank you,
CraigA. My first suspicion would be the filler tube may have been damaged after the fuel tank was put back into place when the fuel pump was replaced. The only way to truly verify this is to drop the fuel tank again and perform a thorough inspection of the filler tube and the associated ventilation lines.
