Volkswagen Jetta Headlight Bulbs
Q. I just bought a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta and would like to change the headlights. Just wanted to see if this is an easy task or if there are hidden issues that need to be addressed by a technician. I have heard on some Jetta's that the battery needs to be removed. Is this true? Also, do you know of an online guide for handling seemingly easy issues like this?
Thanks,
ZaneA. Replacing the headlight bulbs is a fairly easy and straightforward job. On some Jetta's you do have to remove the battery to gain access to the bulb but that's no big deal. If you do remove the battery, make sure you have your radio security code and know how to input it before removing it.
Here's how to replace the headlight bulbs.
CAUTION! Do not touch glass portion of bulb with bare hands. Even the smallest amount of moisture and/or contaminants from fingers that evaporates on the bulb during operation can cause the glass to cloud over.
NOTE: If headlight washer system is present, move hoses to one side if necessary.
- Release spring clip, arrow, and remove sealing cover.
- Disconnect electrical connector, 1, from bulb.
- Push retaining clip, 2, over lugs, 3, and release.
- Pull bulb, 4, out of reflector.
- Do not touch bulb glass when installing.
- Insert new bulb so lugs on bulb plate align with cut-outs in reflector.
- Connect electrical connector, 1.
- Install sealing cover.
- Check headlight low and high beam (bulb) function.
