Ranger Won't OD

Q. Hi - I was writing about my neighbors 1987 4 wheel drive Ford Ranger. 4 cylinder, automatic. It won't go into overdrive anymore (automatic overdrive). I checked and there is power on both plugs on transfer case with key on. Maybe I didn't check right things, but not too familiar with Fords.

Thanks and nice site,
Rob

A. There was a couple of issues with the Overdrive Unit in the A4LD transmissions. One was a possible broken overdrive planetary carrier and the other was the overdrive sun gear support tends to bend into a dished condition causing loss of OD. Both were internal problems and required removal to repair.
