Voyager Is Not Cool
Q. Hi, I have a 1998 Plymouth Voyager mini-van, with a 3.3 Liter engine. 155,000 kms. I have always had the smell from my evaporator, but recently this year I have no cold air. I have an aftermarket warranty which covers any major component in the A/C unit.
I took it to a shop to replace the power steering pump (under warranty) and to have them check out the A/C. Two days later I needed my van. All they did was replace the power steering pump and tell me the A/C is not leaking. It could be the condenser or a electronically controlled door.
Now my question is this, if I go ahead and let them take it apart and it is the condenser I am covered. (Apparently that is a $1100.00 job.) But if it turns out to be an electronic door I have to pay. I am a mechanic myself but not for A/C . I have to take it to this particular garage for the warranty. Is there any type of test I could do myself to help determine the problem? Is the condenser hard to get at on this vehicle?
A. It's almost impossible for me to try and suggest anything in this situation. Perhaps when he has more time, he can make a more accurate diagnosis of the A/C system. By hooking up the A/C gauges he will be able to tell, by the pressure readings, whether the problem is in the condenser (doubtful) or the expansion valve (more likely) or some other part of the system.
If the A/C system is okay, then the problem could be in the blend door inside the car or a heater control valve not closing. something you can check right off is the vacuum lines. Make sure they are in good shape and connected properly. It could very well be that one has come off somewhere.
