Removing Toyota Tundra Converters
Q. Hello, I have a 2000 Toyota Tundra with a 4.7 liter V-8 and automatic transmission. My question is what will happen if I cut out the catalytic converters and just straight pipe it? I live in Wyoming so it's not against the law. I was wondering what this would do to my vehicle performance and engine?
Thanks for your time...
A. While it may not be against Wyoming law, it is against Federal law to remove or disable any part of the vehicle emissions system. There is a rather stiff penalty if you are caught. It's a $100,000.00 fine and up to 5 years in prison.
All that aside, the engine fuel management system is designed to operate with the catalytic converter so it will have an adverse effect on fuel management. It will also turn on the check engine light and the PCM may go into a fail safe mode.
Again, all that aside it will help performance by removing a restriction form the exhaust and allow the engine to put out more power.
