Pecking Maxima
Q. I have a 1992 Nissan Maxima with a VE30DE DOHC engine. It has developed a loud pecking sound inside the valve cover. I put a oil additive in, and it wasn't as loud for about 2000 miles. It is only evident at low rpm's. Is this engine equipped with hydraulic lifters? It's really loud for lifters.

A. There was a TSB, number NTB95-022 issued on this problem February 8, 1995. From the bulletin:

Some VE30DE engines installed in 1992 - 1994 MY SE Maxima vehicles may exhibit noise from the VTC (Variable Timing Control) intake camshaft sprockets under certain engine operating conditions.The diagnostic and repair procedure is rather lengthy and complicated and I would suggest having a Nissan Dealer do the diagnosis and repair.
