Chevy Monte Carlo Questions

Q. I have a 1986 Chevy Monte Carlo SC, 305 engine, automatic transmission. I just passed the 100,000 mile mark a couple months ago, carburetor, and dual exhausts. I have two questions. The first is that my car has been burning a lot of gas lately.

The thing that was done to the car prior to this was my dad changed the spark plugs and the distributor cap, he also put in another fuel filter and changed the air filter. I was wondering if any of that could contribute to the gas problem. The second question is that I bought some new headlights for the car, Sylvania Cool Blue, and I can't keep my bright lights on very long or they will start to blink. Thanks for reading my question.

A. The canister purge valve may be ruptured and allowing raw fuel to be sucked out of carburetor bowl and sucked into the intake. This is a black plastic valve with 4 hoses on it usually near the alternator bracket. If you pull it off and shake it and fuel comes out, replace it. As for the head lights, sounds like they are drawing too many amps for the switch.
