Lincoln Continental Throttle Valve Cable

Q. When I accelerate, instead of a smooth increase in speed, my 1990 Lincoln Continental "DOWN SHIFTS" before accelerating. In fact I have found that this happens a lot. I was told that my throttle is too "SENSITIVE" and needs to be adjusted. Is this your opinion as well? If it is, how do I adjust my throttle?

Thanks,
Dennis

Lincoln Continental Throttle Valve Cable

A. I think you are referring to the Throttle Valve Cable. The Throttle Valve (TV) cable normally does not require adjustment. The only time cable should be adjusted is if one of the following components are replaced: main control assembly, TV cable, TV cable engine mounting bracket, throttle control lever link or lever assembly, engine throttle body, or transaxle assembly.

Here's how to adjust it:

  1. Connect the TV cable eye to the throttle lever link, then attach the cable boot to the chain cover.
  2. With the TV cable mounted in the engine bracket, ensure the threaded shank is fully retracted.
  3. On 3.0 liter engines, to retract the shank, hold the spring rest and wiggle the top of thread shank while pressing the shank.
  4. On 3.8 liter engines, the adjuster spring has two 180° segments. To retract the shank span the crack between two segments with suitable large screwdriver or socket extension rod, compress the spring by depressing rod toward the throttle body, with spring the compressed, push the threaded shank toward spring. NOTE: Do not pull on the cable sheath.
  5. On all models, attach the end of the TV cable to the throttle body.
  6. Rotate the throttle lever to Wide Open Throttle (WOT) position and release.
  7. Threaded shank should show movement or ratchet out of grip jaws. If movement is not present, inspect the TV cable system for broken or disconnected components and repeat procedure as required.
