Probe Window Motor
Q. I have a drivers side window that the lift cable broke and the window fell into the door about 6 months ago. Since then I have propped the window up and have been very warm ever since (A/C lost its charge). I have been able to locate rebuilt motor/regulators and would like to know is how to attach/un-attach the cables from the window and what are the pit falls of installing and power window motor of this type.
Are there any adjustments that need to be made once its installed? How long should this repair take? 1990 Ford Probe GT Turbo.
Thank you,
PaulA. Once you have the door panel off, it will be evident how the window attaches to the cable assembly. There are four rivets that have to be drilled out and two bolts to get the regulator/motor assembly out. One you have them out, you can slide the regulator off the window channel. If I remember correctly, there is a tab on one end that you will have to bend out to get it to slide off.
Once it's all disconnected, you can wiggle it out. I would have someone hold the window in the up position while you do this. If you just prop it up, it may come down on you. Can you say Guillotine?
Just reverse the procedure to put the new one in, replace the bolts and pop four new rivets in. The pitfalls? In plain and simple terms, it's a pain in the ass. Getting the assembly in and out requires a lot of juggling. And make sure you have a few band aids on hand when you do it. You can expect it to take a good two hours to do.
