Slip Sliding Away

Q. I have a 1993 Honda Accord Coupe SE. It is an automatic transmission, 85,000 miles, fuel injection, ABS brakes, and cruise control. While driving the car on the highway the RPM's seem to be running higher than usual. I have owned a manual transmission my whole life. This is my first automatic transmission which I have owned for a year. The feeling is comparable to the clutch slipping on manual transmission car.

Thanks for Help,
Tony

A. If RPM's go up without any increase in speed, then you do have a slipping transmission.

Inside the transmission are clutch packs which function the same as a clutch in a manual transmission. They wear out the same as a manual clutch as well. When they start to wear out, they slip. You might want to try a transmission fluid and filter change before you go into the transmission itself. You may have a partially clogged filter which is lowering the operating pressures. If that doesn't help, I would recommend a rebuild before you do any damage to the transmission.
