GMC Safari Tripping In The Middle East

Q. Hi, it is me again. Let me remind you that I have a 1994 GMC Safari 4.3 liter V-6. I am staying in the United Arab Emirates and I am planning to go for a trip all through Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria, which are the hottest places on earth. Now the question is that in most of these countries they do not sell unleaded fuel, so what can I do about this? Will the leaded fuel harm the engine?

And can I do anything to fight the very high temperature in these countries to keep the engine from overheating? By the way the distance is about 3,500 kilometers and I usually drive without stop.

Regards...

A. The only problem with using leaded fuel is that the lead will damage the catalytic converter. If your vehicle has one, the best thing to do is remove it until you get home and then reinstall it. Otherwise leaded fuel should not harm the engine at all.

To help keep your engine running cool, have the cooling system back flushed and filled with a 50/ 50 mix of anti-freeze and good quality water.

The integrity of any coolant is dependent upon the quality of both components. For this reason, be sure to use clean, drinkable water when mixing coolants. If clean, drinkable water is not available, use de-ionized water available from most grocers.

I would do this at least a week before you leave so if there is a problem, you will discover it at home and not in the middle of the desert. I would also recommend carrying extra water and anti-freeze in case of an emergency.

And please, be very careful in your travels. I would like to see you get home safe and sound.
