Toyota Blower Motor
Q. Hi, I've got one for you. I've got an 1986 Toyota Camry. Blower motor worked sometimes on HIGH. Doesn't work at all now. Relay, fuse, breaker, and switch ok. The resistor is has some coil breaks, but you bypass it on HIGH right?
The motor will work when I wire straight to the battery. I get anywhere from 3-11 volts, depending on how the old girl feels, when I measure at the connector for the motor. I don't see any obvious wiring problems, but you can't get to all of it. As to the fan relay, these either work or not right? I've opened it up, and see the contacts move. What do you think?
A. You're correct about the resistor, at HIGH speed it does get bypassed. To really check the relay accurately, you need to supply power and ground to terminals 1 and 3 respectively and see if you have continuity between terminals 2 and 4. if you do the relay is good.
Now assuming everything you checked so far is good, the only other possibility is the fan switch itself. If you are getting voltage at the motor on HIGH, then the switch is good. The most common thing I have found on those motors is the brushes inside them wear out and as they get close to almost nothing, the operation gets intermittent. You can get a used blower motor at a junk yard pretty cheap and since they are simple to replace, you might want to throw one in to eliminate that possibility.
So as I see it, you're at either a bad fan switch or blower motor.
