Toyota Corolla A/C Stops

Q. I have a 1992 Toyota Corolla and the problem is that the A/C works like the first 20 to 25 minutes and then it would quit sending cold air at which time if I turn it off and wait for some time and turn it back on; it would work okay for a while but after a few miles have been driven it would do the same thing. Please, could you advise?

Thanks,
John

A. The first thing to do is have the refrigerant level checked and make sure it hasn't lost any. If the refrigerant level is good, then what is happening, and especially in high humidity areas, is the evaporator is freezing up.

This is most likely to happen if you leave the air mode in Recirculation. The ice builds up and acts as insulation and cuts off the air flow. If you are running the air in Recirculation mode, switch it to Fresh every 15 minutes and whatever ice has accumulated will be melted by the warm air coming in.
